Art and Design
I have made my living as a sculptor working primarily in studio contemporary glass and metal work since graduating from The Parsons School of Design in NYC over 30 years ago. Around 2004 I made the conscious decision to move into the area of product design which proved a perfect segway into illustration and painting.
I produced designs for Tiffany & Co. in NYC and Daum Cristal, a Parisian based luxury glassware company. I closed my sculpture studio in 2015 and now concentrate on painting, illustration and product design.
My work is in over 20 major permanent collections around the world including The LA County Museum of Art, The Montreal Museum of Art, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Seattle Art Museum among others.
Furthermore, my career and work has been chronicled in the biography, “Seth Randal, Myth & Majesty” written by Jo Lauria and published by the University of Washington Press.
My work is divided into 3 different series
Is about queens, goddesses, and women of stature, position and power. How they dress themselves to demonstrate status, wealth, power and their roles within society. Some, of these women, as in Queen Elizabeth 1, is loosely based upon history whereas others are purely fictional.
Has its roots based upon one of the first classes I took as a student at The Parsons School of Design - Botanical Illustration. Using that training as an inspiration I have abstracted and attenuated classical illustration adding my own flavor and a sense of colour, movement and drama.
Have their own individual stories to tell. Instead of expanding upon the stories myself, I am leaving each individual viewer to draw upon their own imagination to come up with their own stories and dialogues with the hopes of creating unique and exciting interactive experiences.
